For my last column for 2018, I wrote about a young great black hawk from Latin America that became the first of its species ever seen in the United States.

With two exciting coaster projects in the works, Busch Gardens Tampa hopes to cement its position as Florida’s roller coaster capital. The park is home to an impressive coaster collection that includes SheiKra, Kumba, Montu, Cheetah Hunt and Cobra’s Curse.
Hopefully, it, and possibly a smaller one, has now moved on since there’s no suet out there for it to detect with its keen sense of smell. But, of course, only time will tell.
It was instructive to watch all those players and many others, old and new (in this camp, the old come with just as many questions and intrigue, if not more) during my week-plus in the Valley of the (nonexistent) Sun.

Hawley's research program at Virginia Tech focuses on wildlife disease ecology and evolution.
