“Unlike other parts of the world where this brand had a deep history, passed from generation to generation, or it was a forbidden fruit that symbolized everything that was great about America … we don’t have that story in China,” Bergh lamented.
The vertical rides do away with the traditional lift hill and stack the track perpendicularly. They do this rather than letting the course meander horizontally as roller coasters have done for more than a century.
One corner will invite visitors to see African fountain grasses growing among a mesquite collection and paloverde (Parkinsonia florida); as well as many varieties of agaves. Venturing into the center of the Global Collection, they will find a tropical rainforest (with a “misting station” just in case it’s not already humid enough) and a subtropical sanctuary with collections of primitive mangaves (agave hybrids) and dyckias (cold-hardy bromeliads).
The residence’s second-floor deck literally hung right over a cove in the Chesapeake Bay. Masi’s solution yielded a new, flat-roofed house, raised three feet higher than its predecessor—and LEED-certified to boot. The second floor’s outdoor living area can become indoor space when glass panels are pulled out of wall pockets. Read more
Like malls, New York has now built too many casinos. When Turning Stone in Verona opened in 1993, it was the only land-based casino in the entire state. Now there are seven of them along a 100-mile stretch of the thruway from the Rochester area to Albany. With the four new state-run casinos, along with the ones operated by the Indian tribes and the numerous racinos in between, the market has become saturated. Each new casino that opens ends up stealing customers from the others, hurting business for all of them.
“For your safety, never intentionally feed or try to tame bears – it is in your, and the bear’s, best interest,” Autenrieth said. “It is critical that bears retain their natural fear of humans.”
Renderings by lead design firm West 8 envision the heart of the city’s new nature attraction as a curvaceous patchwork of beds and paths where visitors will meander through about a dozen different environments that suggest opposite ends of the earth. The plantings will also reflect the nature of Houston, with its famously diverse population of immigrants — so many visitors may find a sense of home there, or relive travels, or see something for the first time.
“I really loved the dramatic heartline roll,” Schaffer said. “The backward launch was pretty awesome. It’s a fantastic ride.”
Long has been a revelation in camp, displaying an electric bat and dynamic athletic ability. He’s a converted catcher who has been groomed as a second baseman but has been used at third base and the outfield this spring. Long will start in the minors but it’s not hard to envision that he’ll be up at some point this year and could eventually be a guy like Ben Zobrist or Josh Harrison who plays all over the diamond.
The story veers away from this secret into other strands of care and guilt. The narrator worries over his son returning home from school. He recalls a project he recently gave to his students, to write letters to exchange with counterparts in New Zealand, letters he hasn’t sent because he has misplaced his fellow teacher’s address. He hopes the children will forget the undertaking before the end of term and burns the letters, making sure that no scrap remains to float in the air and be found by a child who might discover that his letter was never sent and a reply will never be received. The narrator may be afflicted with terrible compulsions and a tortured dream life, but the implied author is humane, not least for allowing the narrator to resist his attractions.
In the dining room, the ceiling is lower and the fireplace slogan shorter: “The Honor of the House is Hospitality.” Originally the leaded-glass window with fylfots overlooked a porch between the main house and the servants’ quarters and kitchen. That area has since been enclosed and is now taken up by a cabinet-lined butler’s pantry. The kitchen beyond it dates to the 1970s, with a 2008 refresh bringing in new appliances and repainted pine cabinets (the colors inspired by a Depression-era measuring scoop). The countertops remained Formica at the urging of Mr. Bretschger’s daughter.
