The four non-flying Eastern Fox Squirrels regularly scampered up the feeder poles to the seeds, dropped down from the branches or took positions below the feeders. A few bold cardinals and doves were not intimidated by the squirrels. One morning I counted twenty Mourning doves milling around under the back feeder while the squirrels hung out on branches overhead and watched the bobbing heads.
“My wife and I used to garden a lot but it takes too much time now,” said Mark from Lowell. “So we really appreciate these setups and all the work that it takes.”

About the Osaka Castle One of Japan's most famous landmarks, the Osaka Castle is a prolific monument and museum with a storied history spanning six centuries. Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a legendary samurai warrior, completed initial construction of the castle in 1597, creating one of the most impressive structures in the country at the time with a five-story main tower, three underground levels and gold leaf edging the tower to impress visitors. The castle was burned and reconstructed multiple times, though some elements, including walls built in the 1620s, are still standing today. A dramatic restoration project was undertaken in the 1990s to rebuild the tower in the spirit of its Edo-era magnificence, resulting in a fully functional modern museum that opened in 1997 and educates millions of Japanese and international visitors each year.
"From my 17 years working with people who feed birds as part of citizen science projects, I've heard a great deal about their impactful observations at their feeders," said co-author David Bonter, director of Citizen Science at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. "This study provides important information about the breadth and pattern of these experiences through responses of over 1,000 participants. The findings will help us at Project Feederwatch improve how we work with bird watchers toward our shared goal of bird conservation."
