The mainstream media isn’t known for self-awareness. And those in the MSM who report on media are typically as lacking in this regard as their brethren.

THE WATCHMAKER’S GARDEN, by Alexandra Froggatt Inspired by the booming Jewellery Quarter of the late 1800s this garden steps back in time to a watchmaker’s workshop set in their back garden. The watchmaker is mid production of the iconic Chamberlain clock face. Heirloom and heritage vegetables and salads grow alongside cottage garden and self-seeded native flowers. Unkempt grass areas surround the space, with rustic paths and fencing along with Nasturtiums and climbing peas scrambling up posts. Trees and shrubs border the garden, giving a mature feel, as well as screening the boundaries.

Clearly, the time had come to put the feeder out of its misery. I’m embarrassed to admit that I felt a tad sentimental when I parted with the old clunker.

The purpose of Japanese garden design is to encourage peaceful contemplation. Stone lanterns, rain chains, stone basins, waterfalls, koi ponds and bamboo wood spouts are popular additions. Create a welcoming entrance to your Japanese garden using an arbor and potted bonsai trees. Place stepping stones through a low ground cover; include a large rock as a focal point. Enclose your garden with bamboo fencing and panels.

The Steele dossier itself was not sufficient for a story – its contents were bizarre, extreme and unproven. But once it had changed hands – once then-FBI Director James Comey had warned President Trump about its contents – then stories could be written saying, as CNN did, that “classified documents” were “presented last week to Trump.”

Murnane has called his work ‘true fiction’, not for its relation to or relating of actual events – he disdains plot and dialogue – but rather for its fealty to a personal authorial vision. ‘My fiction is a report of what takes place in the mind of a writer,’ he has said. In Tamarisk Row the report is a roving omniscient narration that alights on various characters, describes their actions and perceptions, and reports on the activity of their minds, the minds of characters within their minds, and so on. Murnane’s second novel, A Lifetime on Clouds, is centred on Adrian Sherd, a 15-year-old in a repressive Catholic boys’ school, who is given to elaborate sexual fantasies set in America. (First published in 1976, it was cut in half – ‘mutilated’, in Murnane’s word – by its publishers; the restored manuscript is to be published this year in Australia under the title A Season on Earth.) With their autobiographical frameworks – or to put it with a precision their author might prefer, frameworks with demonstrable autobiographical parallels – these are Murnane’s most conventional novels. None of his later books could be mistaken, as A Lifetime on Clouds was described to me, for the work of an Australian Catholic Philip Roth.

And Strava, an app for workouts, lets me track my bike rides and jogs. A lot of this creates a privacy mess, I know.

And Netflix’s alleged desire for churn only applies to the apparently less popular shows, and/or the ones Netflix doesn’t own outright. House of Cards hung around long past its creative shelf life (which expired well before the Kevin Spacey unpleasantness). Stranger Things and 13 Reasons Why seem likely to stick around forever, too, even though there’s no creative justification for continuing 13 Reasons past the events of its first season. For that matter, many of the creative problems with Netflix’s dramas come from having them produce more episodes than their creative teams have story to tell, which was long a complaint about the broadcast network model.

Now, whether that will make any difference at all in reversing Seager’s poor 2018 season remains to be seen. I’d say a bigger factor will be whether Seager adjusts to the severe shifting that has really seemed to flummox him the past couple of years. Early observation: He’s making a much more concerted effort to beat the shift by going the other way.

Botanists’ Alley will highlight regional species such as Mexican white oak, Muhly grasses, pink skullcap and false red agave (Beschorneria spetrentrionalis) discovered by Ferdinand Lindheimer (the 18th century father of Texas botany), Peckerwood Garden founder John Fairey and the late, renowned plant hunter Lynn Lowery. Also in the subtropical realm, the Upland Forest will have an array of pollinator plants (13 species of asclepias!) and a seasonal display field.
