There’s a mystique about hummingbirds that makes even people who don’t put out feeders for other kinds of birds mix or buy nectar for glass or plastic feeders. And it also makes people buy hummingbird related products, some of which are, well, unusual or just plain dumb.

A bird feeder gives you the opportunity to observe the wonders of nature, taking a little break from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Bird feeding provides therapy or relaxation (65 percent of respondents), it helps people learn bird behavior and identification (61 percent), and it offers educational experiences for children (21 percent).

Considering the state of the economy at that time, I seriously doubt he could’ve pulled that off. Still, maybe Hynes could go back to his old notes and give the new governor some advice.

The plants should be small and suited to free-draining conditions. We used tender cacti and succulents. Typically, trough gardens receive alpine or rock garden perennials, bulbs, and dwarf conifers and shrubs. These are all hardy and content in troughs meant to stay outside. The tender plants — these include all the succulents that have become so popular in recent years — can spend the growing season outdoors once temperatures warm up but should come inside in a cool, bright environment away from frost by Halloween. When outside, they should be away from exposed, sunny locations.
