The Plain Old Telephone Service, or POTS, doesn’t get a lot of love from the average person anymore. Perhaps once in a while a payphone will be of use when a phone battery has died, but by and large many people simply don’t have hardwired phones anymore. My mother and I used to take an annual springtime bird watching pilgrimage to Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, out in the high desert of Oregon. I honestly cannot think of a better place to go: In addition to the abundance of migratory birds, the landscape is stark and mesmerizing with rimrock cliffs, long expanses of high desert, and the aromatic smell of juniper and sage. The last time we went (this was at least 10 years ago) we spent too much time (it was actually wonderful) walking around in the sagebrush desert trying to flush out chukars. Neither of us had ever seen one and we wanted to so badly! So, of course, we never did - we thought we glimpsed something moving in the scrub, but nothing we could confirm. Now, long after my mom is gone, I still think about that search and hope to sometime see a chukar out in the scrub of the high desert.
