The process of writing fiction comes to the fore in this period. The 1986 story ‘Stone Quarry’ posits a network of fiction workshops ‘more strict than a Trappist monastery’ that bring together half a dozen writers in silence for several days, allowing them to communicate only in messages encoded in their fiction, which is signed with pseudonyms that change every day. Those who break the silence are made to sit alone in a room and transcribe pages from the works of great solitary authors. A second offence results in expulsion. Talk ‘drains away the writer’s most precious resource, which is the belief that he or she is the solitary witness to an inexhaustible profusion from which might be read all the wisdom of the world’. The 1988 novel Inland is narrated by a writer in Hungary who sends his manuscripts to the editor of a magazine called Hinterland, based in Ideal, South Dakota. Hungary and America are Murnane’s dreamlands: one a landlocked country isolated by its non-Indo-European tongue; the other a vast zone of anglophone colonisation, an alternate, purer and more fertile Australia. The writer in Hungary lusts after his editor and grows jealous of her husband. He is sustained by visions of her reading his work on the virgin prairies. The equation of reading and writing with sex and landscape is just another example of Murnane’s principle of transformation, or imaginative multiplicity: ‘I learned that no thing in the world is one thing; that each thing in the world is two things at least, and probably many more than two things. I learned to find a queer pleasure in staring at a thing and dreaming of how many things it might be.’

As the anniversary marking 12 years since Madeleine went missing nears, Netflix will reportedly release a new documentary examining the case.

The Olbiston apartment building is a historical piece of architecture built from sandstone of the Medina Group (about 45 miles outside of Buffalo). This stone had a different range from light grey to dark reddish brown or pinkish red. It was easier to work, strong, harder and more durable — perfect for building. While also used for walkways and crosswalks, it was excellent for steps and retaining walls.

Long has been a revelation in camp, displaying an electric bat and dynamic athletic ability. He’s a converted catcher who has been groomed as a second baseman but has been used at third base and the outfield this spring. Long will start in the minors but it’s not hard to envision that he’ll be up at some point this year and could eventually be a guy like Ben Zobrist or Josh Harrison who plays all over the diamond.

“They’re still out there, but we’re seeing a trend toward more compact fountains with multiple bowls flowing into each other. They’re not your traditional three- or four-level fountain,” says Hanold.

Many people like the look of fountains, ponds or other water features with an aged appearance, as if they were always a natural part of the yard. “Some people are doing more woodland types of fountains that blend into the landscape,” Steele says. “They might look like fallen logs.”

Journalist and commentator Glenn Greenwald — a longtime skeptic of the collusion angle — tweeted his contempt for the media coverage on Sunday, too: “Check every MSNBC personality, CNN law ‘expert,’ liberal-centrist outlets and #Resistance scam artist and see if you see even an iota of self-reflection, humility or admission of massive error.”

"Overall, our results suggest that people who feed birds observe aspects of nature and respond in ways that may affect outcomes of feeding on wild birds. More work is needed to fully understand the positive and negative effects of feeding on wild birds and, thereby, the people who feed them," said Dayer, whose research focuses on the human dimensions of wildlife conservation, applying social science to understand human behavior related to wildlife.
