Freeing One Day at a Time or any of its other recent cancellations from restrictive contracts won’t solve some of the service’s other issues. But it would be effectively symbolic of the kind of benevolent corporate ethos Netflix tries to present to the world. There will always be decisions that are better for the bottom line than they are for the audience. But Netflix can be a lot smarter and outwardly empathetic in how those decisions appear to its more frustrated subscribers.

I’ve had the opportunity to spend time in northern New England a couple of times in recent weeks. I often feel drawn to the woodsy wildness of our northern states, even in winter. The big, girthy birches and huge hemlocks, the Christmas tree smell of Balsam fir, the crunch of snowshoes breaking the heavy, snowy silence of those north woods.

My mother and I used to take an annual springtime bird watching pilgrimage to Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, out in the high desert of Oregon. Now, long after my mom is gone, I still think about that search and hope to sometime see a chukar out in the scrub of the high desert.
